Tamarind Wood - A feast for the eyes

Tamarind wood comes from the tamarind tree (Tamarindus indica) native to tropical regions in Asia, Africa and South America. It is known for its hardness, density and durability, making it a desirable wood for various uses.

The wood is an attractive beige to almost white color streaked with reddish brown to almost black and has a fine grain which gives it an attractive appearance. It is also resistant to fungal and insect infestation, further enhancing its durability and longevity.

However, due to its hardness and density, tamarind wood is difficult to work with and requires special tools and skills. It also has a high density, which means it is heavier than many other types of wood and has a high load-bearing capacity.

The density of tamarind wood varies depending on growing conditions and can range from 610 kg/m³ to 885 kg/m³. As a rule, tamarind wood has an average density of around 720 kg/m³. This density is comparable to other tropical hardwoods such as mahogany and teak.

Tamarind wood is used in many different applications including furniture, construction, shipbuilding, musical instruments and carving. However, it should be noted that in some regions the cultivation and use of tamarind wood may be restricted, as tamarind trees are often used as a source of food and medicine as well.
