Mahogany solid wood - good from experience

When the Dutch ruled Indonesia during the colonial period, they planted mahogany trees along the edges of the newly built roads, because even the old Dutch knew how to appreciate this high-quality wood, especially for the construction of furniture and ships.

Mahogany is a noble wood known for its beauty and durability. It comes mainly from Central and South America, but also from Africa and Asia. Mahogany wood has a warm, reddish-brown color and a distinctive, striped grain.

Because of its excellent properties, mahogany is often used for high-quality furniture, musical instruments, boats and other high-quality wood products. It is known for its strength, stability and resistance to moisture, pest infestation and rotting.

Where does the mahogany wood come from?

The quality of Indonesian mahogany has not changed to this day. However, most of the wood no longer comes from the roadside, but from small plantations on the island of Java.

Mahogany also grows wild in Indonesia, with the species "Swietenia macrophylla" also known as "large-leaved mahogany" predominating. However, it is important to note that the wild populations of mahogany in Indonesia and other countries are threatened in some cases due to overexploitation and illegal logging.

That is why our wood also comes from plantations where mahogany is grown to meet the demand for mahogany wood. These plantations are often run by the government and private companies to promote sustainability and conservation of wild mahogany stocks.

However, it is important to note that not all mahogany plantations are run sustainably and it is therefore important to look for sustainable (VLEGAL and FLEGT certified) sources when purchasing mahogany wood.

Our suppliers are of course VLEGAL and FLEGT certified.
